A growing number of universities are now offering online courses which have come as a boon for working professionals looking to continue their education. There is a lot of flexibility in online courses, and they are accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

However, since the setup is different than a traditional classroom, students of online courses need to strategize their learning process in a different way than traditional courses. Since the classes are all online, one of the most common problems of online learning is that students tend to procrastinate in the absence of supervision. Only a self-motivated student can successfully complete an online course.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of an online course.

Avoid distractions

Internet is chock-full of fascinating information, and every URL can be appear tempting, but do not succumb. Try to concentrate on your designated subject rather than visiting your favorite websites. A good tip is to hide your favorite bookmarks or to use another web browser. Alternatively, you could also visit a library during the scheduled course time and use their computers. Apart from online distractions, also make sure that there are no real world distractions such as television, music system etc.

Follow a regimen

It is best to set aside a fixed time for your lectures online, rather than follow an erratic schedule. This disciplined routine will make you more attentive towards the lectures and will also help you focus better. A regular class may dedicate 4-5 hours per week for a particular subject; you could follow the same technique. Create a timetable with due dates, test dates etc. and post it near your study area. Online courses are flexible indeed, but setting a fixed study routine can prevent you from slacking off.

Keep in touch with your professor

Unlike traditional classes, in an online environment you do not get to interact with your instructors on a day-to-day basis; yet it is advisable to keep contact with them for adequate guidance during the course of study. You may choose to communicate via mails or chat.

Use online tools

There are many useful online tools that can be used to help you during studies. For example, Sparknotes is a website that offers quizzes and short summaries on different subjects; Flashcard Exchange lets you make online flashcards for free; Hippocampus.org offers free study materials; and Prezi is a great online presentation tool. Make the most of all these tools.

Authenticate your sources

Since there is no dearth of information available online, it becomes difficult to judge which is real and which is false; therefore make sure that you cross-check your information. It is wise to take information from reliable and authentic sources. You can browse through online libraries for peer reviewed papers and research reports.

Take adequate breaks

Many a time, you may get too engrossed in a subject and keep researching on it without realizing that hours have passed. Make sure that you take enough breaks while studying in order to replenish your energy and to avoid getting burnt out.

Don’t take online learning for granted

Many students tend to take their coursework lightly while pursuing online courses because there is no one to keep a check on them. But remember that exams in online courses are every bit as real as the ones in traditional courses. Frantic learning just a day before the exam does not serve any purpose. It is important to space out your assigned work throughout the year so that you are able to absorb the information and process it on time, rather than merely learning stuff by rote just a day or two before the exam.

By making sure that you are self-disciplined and by following a proper learning process, you can excel in your online course.

When you are in the process of organizing a school play, one of the things you will need to be very critical about is how you get the props for the play. Whether you are going to organize the play for competition purposes or not, it’s always a good idea to try and ensure that you do your best to get the best in terms of props. This sounds to be expensive, but the good thing is that in reality it isn’t. Some of the ways of reducing the cost of such items and still getting high quality include:

Have the students prepare some of them

In some cases, it is normally a lot of fun to make the props in class or at home. This means that when you are organizing the school play, you could try and ask the participants to make some of the props in question. Of course, you should not ask them to do something that is too complex for them. You could also give them a few ideas on how to create the different props.

Buy online

If you are not keen on asking your students to prepare the props, you could decide to buy them from other sources, such as online stores. The good thing about this is that it gives you an opportunity to benefit from very high quality craftsmanship. Depending on the kind of contractor you choose to work with, you are likely to find that they are very good at providing high quality props that are actually very realistic in terms of looks. The good thing about shopping online is that it also gives you an opportunity to look around for the most affordable props, so that you will end up with very good value for money.

In addition to the props in question, you may also need to consider other auxiliary items that you will need. For instance, you may need to also rent or buy fall protection products that will be used when setting up props that need to be installed at a height. All in all, the thing you need to remember is that when you are organizing a school play, how you get quality props should not be something to worry about too much. As you can see, there are many ways of getting them without having to go through too much of a hassle or spending too much money.

Merriam Webster defines stress as a “physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension” (definition 3). It often comes when expectations and reality clash.

Many students expect a certain letter grade in response to their performance. When they don’t reach the potential they expect, they stress.

They feel like they’ve failed miserably and ruminate on that thought for hours to days at a time. After that, they can’t help but perform poorly in everything else they do.

Stress is a downward spiral that makes you want to give up. In regards to school work, there’s nothing that will determine poor performance quite like expecting to fail.

It has nothing to do with the actual performance capabilities of the student. It’s the stress that does it.

Stress is a disabling factor that needs to be removed. Students need to remove the expectations they hold for themselves.

They need to reduce the high expectations they hold for themselves and transform them into a better tool for the job. This is how they can do just that.

Expectations are great tools. They act as bars of behavior that you measure yourself to.

These bars are set as bare minimum performance requirements to “qualify” as an acceptable person. That’s the problem.

When a tool isn’t working the way it should, what do you do? You replace it with a better tool for the job.

Change your expectations into goals. Goals are something you strive for, not a performance level you expect.

You can’t get too hurt if you don’t measure up. The goal was to achieve something great, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t do a good job along the way.

You begin to see that the reason you didn’t measure up was because of a simple mistake. It isn’t that you aren’t intelligent enough; it’s that you didn’t study long enough.

It wasn’t that you are a horrible writer; you just let another episode or two of How I Met Your Mother take away valuable paper writing time. Even the best writers need to edit their work.

That extra hour or so minutes would have let you edit your paper before turning it in. Goals help you see what you did wrong so you can make conscious choices to do better in the future.

As you approach your school work, minimize the stress of failure by making goals the class. Make a letter grade goal for each assignment you complete.

Think about what kind of work you need to do to ensure you do well. Make a goal for the grade you’ll receive on each test and for the class as a whole.

If you miss your mark, remember that it’s not the end of the world. Whether it was a simple homework assignment for Accounting 101, or the last exam of your Accounting major, you just missed a goal.

That doesn’t mean that your future in Accounting is over before it began. It simply means that you didn’t do as well as you had hoped, but you still did a great job.

When you know that you want to start working in a hospital, it can be discouraging to realize that getting a job in a hospital may be harder than it sounds. Although there are consistently job openings in the medical field, the job openings are often extremely competitive.

Figuring out how to get a job in a hospital can be difficult if you do not do your research ahead of time. Doing some research may provide you with the ability to ascertain which job position that you would like to compete for.

You should start by being persistent about the job position that you are looking into. You want to make sure that the recruiting team knows you and that you are familiar with the people that are going to help you get into the hospital for an interview.

Calling the recruiting team of the human resources office on a consistent basis to talk about your application or about potential job openings is a great way to get your name out there. Having these teams see that you really care about the position can be beneficial for your chances.

While you are getting your resume ready to send out, do not be afraid to get some constructive criticism from those that can help you better your resume. Take your resume and cover letter to a nursing professor and graciously accept any changes that they recommend.

You should be sure that you go into these meetings with an open mind. It can be hard to receive criticism on something that you have worked hard on or something that you feel is perfect, but getting this criticism can be extremely beneficial.

As you continue to put in applications, it can be disheartening to continue to get rejections back. Although this is a natural feeling, try to keep your spirits up and it is especially important that you continue to put yourself out there and apply for jobs that you would want.

While you are applying, you may find job postings that are not exactly what you want but will be well worth applying for. If you can find a job that will help you get your foot in the door, the job may be the first step in providing you with the career that you want.

Getting a job in a hospital is often much more difficult than transferring within a hospital. Taking time to apply for a variety of jobs is a great way to ensure that you have left enough doors open for yourself to have a choice as to what you are going to go into.

As you are pursuing a career in nursing, do not be afraid to ask for additional advice or tips from those that may have more experience. Talk with your professors or deans at your school and you may find more advice that will help you get the nursing job that you want at a hospital.

Isn’t it amazing how you can read through an entire chapter and get absolutely nothing out of it? The only thing you are acutely aware of at the end of your hour or so is that you somehow pushed through thirty pages without taking in a single word.

“That’s quite impressive,” you try to convince yourself for a while, before the irritation starts sinking in. You wasted so much time and the last thing you want to do now is go back and reread.

You just wish that you could read more effectively the first time. Instead of wasting that hour, improve your reading with a special technique.

There is a way, and it’s learning to skim intelligently before, during, and after you delve into a text. It is a very effective tool to improve your studies.

Start with a skim of everything you will cover. This step has 2 major implications.

First, it is okay to skim your material. That is a truth that most students don’t realize.

Skimming has a bad reputation with tools like Cliff Notes. The idea is that you will never get what you need out of a skim, or summary.

That is just not true. The reason for this criticism is that many people are using that skim or summary as a shortcut to get out of the more involved work.

If that’s all you plan on doing with your skim, then you are doing it wrong. If you’re using it to get into material to prep your mind before you step in again with a fine-tooth comb, then that’s another story.

Skimming can be quite helpful as an introduction to study. It will help you see the larger picture of the puzzle before examining the individual pieces.

That broader view can help you put the pieces in the right places as you read the text in-depth. The second implication is that you’ll have to read the text multiple times.

Repetition is the unfortunate truth of mastering any new concept. You have to hear it or see it multiple times to master it.

A skim can count as a read, giving you twice the exposure you would normally get. Fortunately, a skim can be extremely brief, taking up no more than 10-15 minutes of effective reading before the big read (as opposed to an hour of ineffective sleeping).

Next, skip occasional words or phrases and forget the guilt trip to follow. Anyone who has read Lord of the Rings knows that you can skip a chapter of detail about the forest and not miss any plot development.

Even textbooks have fluff. Don’t feel bad about skimming through that fluff (or through concepts you already understand).

There is no need to torture your mind by meticulously picking through details that are (1) unimportant, (2) general knowledge, or (3) you already know. Skimming is completing the motions, not hindering them.

CollegeAmerica is a college offering a degree in Medical Specialties in Phoenix. Students seeking a Medical Specialties degree in Phoenix have so much to learn that mastering the art of skimming will help them learn, review, and apply difficult concepts more effectively.

Spring is here and the smell of new books is in the air. With so many different great books to read in 2013, we have chosen our favorite books of the spring.

Eleanor & Park

Remember the first time you fell in love. This love story tells the tale of two 16 year old outsiders who are drawn together because of their love of comic books. The story takes place in Omaha in the 80s. The story revolves around Park and Eleanor who are completely different. Each of them face their own challenges. Park is half-Korean and is sometimes made fun off because of his ethnicity. Eleanor thinks she is too big and comes from a poor family where she has to share her room with four other siblings. They find themselves together when they meet on a school bus. Soon they find themselves sharing X-Men and Watchmen comics. It the type of book that you will want to keep reading to find out what happens next. With a light delicate feel, it manages to capture the feeling of your first crush.

Prodigy

Prodigy by Marie Lu is the second book in the Legend Series. The book takes all of the excitement of the original to another level. It’s a hard breaking story that will tear away at your heart over and over. By the end, it’s hard not to feel pain for the characters in the story. We pick up right after the end of the first book. The story center around two characters, June and Day, who have escaped their oppressive government and turn to the Patriot Rebels. They are asked to take part in an assassination that will lead to many moral dilemmas along the way. It’s a book that blurs the line between good and evil.

Dark Triumph

We love the Far Assassin series from Robin LaFevers. Grave Mercy was one of the best books of last year. It combined the world of Gods and mortals in a tale of seduction. This book is so much different from the first tale in that it is more personal. The main characters are completely different. Sybella is a lot more brutal. Her troubled past means that she does not trust anyone. She tries to assassinate her father and everyone under him. It is hard to follow the story without having read the first book. The two stories are intertwined. It will be interesting where the story takes us with Mortal Heart.

School is fun for many people, that is before exam day, here in known as the D-day. However many a personal coaches and life skill trainers will tell you that the human mind is conditioned to see the negative more than the positive. They are proponents of positive self-affirmation.

A comedian tore into this principle by saying that it means that if you are short; you should wake up and just lie to yourself. However positive affirmation works, telling yourself daily that you can do something, you eventually do it with ease; therefore, here is how to turn D day into an A day:

Start studying early

Many people have become engulfed with the idea of last minute studying and cramming for their exams. Others have become cheaters and boast about it. The question however remains, if you cheat and if you cram for your exams, what kind of professional does that make you. You should start preparations early, especially for professions such as becoming a nurse or a doctor, who deal with human beings.

Do your research and enquiries

Albert Einstein was a perennial asker; problems presented him with opportunities to find solutions to them. The thing is you need to ask for the answers on issues you cannot control and others that you cannot find answers to. This gives you new knowledge, you will be able to understand whatever it is, and then it will be up to you to innovate and know more about that subject.

Go through past exams

As you take your nurse exam, it is always good to go through it imagining every question to be the patient you shall face in the OR or general ward. Seeing those symptoms on the patient helps you to be able to address an answer the question concretely. Passing your exams is not enough they should be aced. Going through the past exams will help you notice the trend of questions that are asked, the areas that are examine and this will be good preparation for your exam. Human nature is by itself repetitive, you should therefore expect not the same questions but similar looking format or questions.

Prepare for your exam

Before the A day, you need to have all you need for the exams. From the elementary pens and pencils, you will need reference materials for exams that allow them. You will need a rested mind, which means that you have to balance out your late nights by ensuring that you sleep at least six hours to rest your brain. A fresh brain is a brain that performs at peak performance, go and Ace it.

The study of gemology is mandatory for anyone interested in working with diamonds on a professional level. One should attain a diploma in it. To be a broker, one needs to get a certification title.

Get accredited courses, do not be lured by other courses, you need a hands on training to get fully certified.

Seek your first experience to get a hand of what it entails exactly. Do so by applying for jobs in the diamond sector. This will build up your resume.

Then, you can start once you receive your license. It also gives credence to the legality of your company.

For those diamond brokers who double up as jewelry shop owners, it is imperative to know the best way to provide security for your merchandise. There are various systems that can be used to deter intruders and maintain safety for the shop employees.

The smoke cloak This is a dense fog field and when aimed strategically it prevents the intruders from viewing what is inside the shop and this works within seconds of activation. It also has automatic activation although it can be activated manually with the use of a hold up button.

The store layout – Display counters should not be near entry or exits of the shop. The cash register should be facing the entrance and not away from it. That way, you can see potential trouble maker walking in and gauge from their body language. That way you are well prepared.

Entry and exit points – Make sure that they have metal detector archways as they act as deterrent to potential intruders from bringing in weapons. At night, additional alarms need to be activated and connected to your local police station.

Surveillance systems – This is mandatory for any jewelry shop. Cameras with motion sensors and floodlights are some of the equipment you can use to secure the shop. They should be strategically located and have a bird’s eye view of the premises without easily being detected or vandalized. The cameras should allow for remote control and internet access.

Manned security – This cannot be overlooked. It is important to have an experienced security person watching over the store.

Restrict access – Always ensure that all the display cases are locked at all times even when you remove an item to show to a customer, lock up in the interim. Those few minutes can make a vast difference of a few thousand dollars.

Let’s face it technology and innovation has certainly changed the way we put things in perspective in this day and age. When it comes to the World Wide Web, it seems that the Internet users are not keen on reading lengthy blog posts or long drawn out details. The attention span of an average Internet user is quite short, and as a writer, it is important that you do not only pique their interest. It will also be imperative that you help maintain their readership. Keep them captivated on the point you are trying to get across. Whether your trying to sell something or just get your thoughts out there, you need too keep the readers focused on that. This can be rather difficult at times.

One of the first things that these readers will be looking at would be your headline. If the title of the post or the headline is not interesting enough, then there is a huge possibility that they will move on to the next page or the next article. To be able to get noticed, you should be able to appeal to their emotions.Think of the many different things that would help one improve themselves. Do you want to feel more confident? Attractive? Do you want to be smarter? Learn more? Earn more money? Are you aiming to be healthy? Be an expert in a specific industry or field? The list is endless, so you can decide to choose from any of these characteristics and capitalize on that. You have to pull the reader in with your headline. They want too feel like their going to get something for reading your article. Everyone wants to feel like they are being talked too personally.

Another way to be able to get noticed is when you are able to make sure that the reader feels empowered. If you are able to make your reader feel that they have a voice and that they can take an active role in the topic that you are writing about, then this becomes a lot more appealing to them. You need to appeal to them personally. People feel special when they are being talked too. Then they are more likely too do what it is you wrote the article about in the first place. Interactive writing can help you get noticed as a writer. Writing about controversial topics can also help you. People love too be challenged and argued with. There is no such thing as bad publicity when you are trying to get noticed. You have to create controversy. Nobody wants to read a nice boring article where nothing is argued or brought up again. You have to strike quickly and strongly with your thesis and topic sentences. Don’t be afraid to fail. Here are some quick and simple tips from Grammarly to help you get started.

Competition is fierce in almost any kind of industry, so make sure that you are able to do everything that you can to get noticed!
